Matera was created from a rocky ravine and the many natural caves in the area–called the "Sassi di Matera" - were the first houses of the Neolithic inhabitants of the region. The caves create a labyrinth of houses, and it's practically impossible to distinguish the natural rock formations from the ancient architecture. The houses seem to sprout from the rock in an organic way, creating somewhat of a tourist attraction from what was in the mid 20th century a ghost town. Matera was notably the setting for Mel Gibson's film "The Passion of the Christ".
Matera is the only place in the world where people can boast to be still living in the same houses of their ancestors of 9,000 years ago.

Very clear review of the beauties of Matera, thanks! We are going to visit Matera this summer, friends are advicing us to visit the Restaurant Il Terrazzino. What do you think about that? The cuisine is Italian, tipical of the area, the price range is 27-54 Usd, and they recommended for a romantic evening, the outdoor seating and - of course - local cuisine. Cheers from Bristol, Amira and James.
ReplyDeleteHi, Amira and James, Matera is really an interesting place to visit, we have been there by the end of June, we were a group of 15 people. We booked the same restaurant il Terrazzino, fantastic food, we have tasted the tipical completely local italian food, and we just paid 15 Euro each of us.
ReplyDeletewhat we eat:
antipasto: cheese, mozzarrelle, prosciutto crudo, salame, olive, ricotta, mortadella...
primo piatto(1st dish): tipical local food, orecchiette.
Secondo piatto (2nd dish): you can choose grilled lamb, meat, or a vegetable insalata.
last dish: choose a dessert, coffee (italian express), or any other drinks.
what's more, outdoor of this restaurant, a very nice view of Sassi di Matera, amazing...
I am sure that you will enjoy this trip.
